20091117 K.Will, back with ‘K.Will-ish’ album soaring as a representative ballad singer.

February 6, 2010 by all about K.Will

Here came the season when fierce wind passes by. There’s nothing better than a ‘deep’ ballad song that will comfort our lonely hearts in this cold winter. That’s why I think of him a lot in this season, K.Will.

He’s the kind of man who goes well with this season, singing ‘deep’ ballad with his deep voice. K.Will is back with his official second album, ‘Miss, Miss and Miss’. Tears are going to pour only by reciting the title.

When I listen to ‘Miss, Miss and Miss’, I’m surprised at the sorrow and when I look at the album I’m amazed once more at his sincerity. He released an album packed with as many as 18 tracks, which isn’t too common in this day and age. There’s not one song which is less important to him.

# Lucky to come across such a song

When I was to meet him, the first thing that I was worried about was his health. He has suffered from H1N1 influenza, which made me wonder about his condition. He has had high fever as if he had been through a heartbreak.

K.Will said, “I’m really fine now. I can’t even count how many times I’ve said that. When I caught the flu, I couldn’t even open my eyes due to the fever that was as high as 40 degrees Celsius. I was most concerned about my voice. I had too severe a fever that I even worried my voice would change,” he smiled.

Despite all the worries, his voice was fine, no, it was even deeper.

K.Will introduced ‘Miss, miss and miss’ as a song that impressed him so much that the moment he listened to it for the first time, he wanted it so bad. “Great songs make me wonder if the lyrics or the melody was written first, and this song certainly did. Some even said that as a singer it is a very lucky thing to come across such a song.”

K.Will said, “Nowadays, there are so many songs which only care about public popularity. But as a vocalist, all I ever want to do is sing and not care about all those formulas for success. That’s why I put emphasis on authenticity of the album. In a nutshell, this album is like Korean food, in that the more times you experience it, the better it feels.”

#Pressure

From ‘Love119′ to ‘Dropping the tears’, every song he released was responded with much enthusiasm from the public. That might made him feel more burdened. In this situation where people were expecting the song K.Will’s going to bring, what he chose was the regular tactics for the attack.

K.Will explained, “Thinking that now is the most important moment, I wanted to show who I was and that I’m still in a stage of developing.”

It looked like he had a special affection for the song ‘Love119′, which made today’s K.Will. I wondered what kinds of thoughts he had in mind when he was gaining great popularity.

K.Will reminisced, “I thought, ‘No one’s supposed to really die out’. I once saw Han bi-ya say on TV ‘The moment you fall off a cliff, you’ll realize that you have a wing’, and that’s exactly what I felt. I doubted a little when I saw that I had a wing. Part of it was because I haven’t accepted anything so easily before. That much I was stunned, happy, and on the other hand I felt pressure.”

#Adventurer K.Will

K.Will says he doesn’t like a game in the bag. He likes the one in which he has no idea if he will win or lose, so that he has to throw himself into it. It’s the same this time. Man outstanding singers are active lately, but that only makes him more willing to sing earnestly.

K.Will said, “Singing industry thesedays is just like the chaos in the ancient Chinese history. There are so many songs, and the music charts flip and turn every day. It is also very energetic now that many solo singers have made their comeback stages. This situation keeps urging me.

What does K.Will feel like when he sees the idol groups? He confessed, “I envy them in that they can sing at an early age. Plus, when I made my debut, all I had was my song. But those kids, they not only sing well, but also dance very well, not to mention their good-looking appearances. They seem ‘just perfect’. Especially when the group SHINEE sang ‘You’re so beautiful(Replay)’, I loved the song, but I had somewhat of a stereotype that songs that sound too much like western pop music are difficult to gain popularity. But when I watched them as they were becoming more and more popular, I was a bit envious.”

#Man’s age Thirty

K.Will turns 30 next year(2010). Thirty, it’s another point to start over.

K.Will confessed, “As people age, it’s natural to have a change in their thoughts. I have thought that there has to be a special occasion for a person to change, but as I get older I’m gradually changing. Looking back, I realize that I’ve changed a lot. When I saw babies before, I just thought they were cute. But now, I could almost cry at how beautiful my friends’ babies are. Sensibilities change as well. It also feels natural.”

K.Will is having his first solo concert on December 25th at Yeonsei Univ. “I’ve never imagined I could wrap up 2009 with my very concert. I am in the seventh heaven. I guess I can expect a heart-throbbing year. Recently, as I’m trying my best to make this concert the best one, I’m quite nervous. I cried at my debut stage and my first showcase. Probably I will do so after this concert,” he smiled.

To a question if K.Will cry when he gets the first place in a music program, he responded with a smile. “Well, I don’t really know until it happens to me.” It feels like he’s going to soar as a representative ballad singer with his new album.

Not so far as my love

I can’t do it, forgetting you.
I can’t do it, not seeing you.
This love is more difficult than dying for me.
I’m even happy with the long waitings.

I can’t do it. However far I run away,
I just keep going around in circles.
Though you’re not around
and you don’t smile to me,
I’ve never felt this happy before.

Not so far as my love,
not so far as my heart.
My sore feelings,
someday you’ll notice, too.
Though it hurts
and this love’s like a poison to me,
my mean heart and my head will
remember you and wait for you.

I can’t do it. Several seasons pass by,
but I’m waiting here just like this.
A glimpse from a distance is fine.
I just want to see you again.
I’m even okay with your man next to you.

Not so far as my love,
not so far as my heart.
My sore feelings,
someday you’ll notice, too.
Though it hurts
and this love’s like a poison to me,
my mean heart and my head will
remember you and wait for you.

For a long time you’ve been secretly growing on me.
This love that I can’t stop, it’s for you…so,

I want to love.
I want to give all my heart to you.
I want to live for you,
the time given to me.
If it’s a love I can’t quit at my will,
I’ll just wait here like this.
No matter when it is,
as long as you come back.

20090428 Interview Part IV: Dreaming of a ‘leather’ designer?

January 31, 2010 by all about K.Will

Recently, celebrities are jumping into other stuff a lot. Actress Ku Hye-sun has made her debut as a writer, releasing a novel ‘Tango’ and she’s showing her talent as a conductor of independent films, as well. Cha In-pyo also published his novel ‘Goodbye, hills’ which deals with victims from the Japanese comfort woman during the war.

Likewise, actress Bae Doo-na is being recognized as a photographer and even has her own corner in a magazine. I asked K.Will if he wants to do anything else other than singing.

K.Will is said to have been acknowledged as a photographer for a while. He said, “I’ve had a lot of interests in many things (especially in arts), but I seem to have dropped out all the things besides music. That part was somewhat regretful.”

Very uniquely, he mentioned ‘leather craft’ as what he would like to do. “Some people say that it doesn’t seem like my kind of thing, but I really like the smell and tinge of leather. I fancy leather bags, accessories and anything. So I think I would enjoy making things with leather.”

His acquaintances say K.Will as a leather craftsman is kind of weird but matches him quite well. Let’s expect him to come out as a ‘designer’ someday.

20090428 Interview Part III : Singing alone, ‘want to be in a group someday’.

January 31, 2010 by all about K.Will

K.Will expressed his frank feelings that he’s sometimes envious of the teams who work as groups. “Once, I’ve been in an a capella group. Sometime in the future I’d like to be in a group again.”

K.Will, who once took part in an a capella group named ‘Manish’ said, “At that time there were not many a capella groups with only men. Our group was rivals with ‘Sweet Sorrow’, and people quite liked our group.

“I was very into the group ‘Boyz II Men’ in middle school. I grew up listening to men group. I think that’s why I would like to be in such a group around mid 30s. I’d like to sing at the back rather than in the front sometime,” he added.

“I especially envy the group ‘Sweet Sorrow’. When I look at them chatting and giggling it looks really fun. The best thing about that team is that they spontaneously made the group, and it was not made by anyone else.”

He also said, “I was always with them at their historic moments. At their first concert, at their first radio show, and so on.”

On the other hand, recollecting the past he past, he said “I was really good with the naming of our a capella group. ‘Manish’ not only meant masculine features of our group, but it was also from the lyrics of Stevie Wonder’s song ‘Lately’ : man of many wishes.

20090428 Interview Part II : Tear-dropping experience? I had one.

January 31, 2010 by all about K.Will

K.Will’s title song, ‘Dropping the Tears’ has become so popular that there are even parody music videos.

K.Will’s voice which touches people’s hearts is throwing energy into his ‘against-the-season’ song. I asked him if he has any ‘tear-dropping’ experience.

K.Will tried to recall his tear-dropping memory, saying “I was really tearless when I was young. Ever since I chose music, I tend to cry more. I’m sometimes ashamed as it feels like I’m becoming childish.”

To this demanding question, he mused a while earnestly and finally opened his mouth. “I actually had that kind of experience.”

He carefully explained, “I can’t be too specific, but I once made my mind to never make a woman cry. Inevitably, however, I had to break up with my girlfriend. It was something like ‘일초에 한 방울 (one teardrop per second)’ situation. She cried and my heart was just rending. That scene comes to my mind when I think of the moment of crying awfully much.”

He awkwardly smiled, “In fact, I cry rather more at a happy scene than at a sad one. As I did when I was watching ‘Jerry Maguire’, I also cried when I was on ‘Yoon Do-hyun’s love letter’ for the first time. I cried in the waiting room, in the bathroom, behind the stage, and cried again and again. I was so blissful.”

And then he admitted that he was engrossed in the parody music video that was made by one fan.

“Some scenes were really touching, especially when actor So Ji-sub cried. It was a scene from the drama ‘I’m sorry, I love you’, and it went so well with my song that I was really struck,” he said frankly.

He mentioned that this album maximized its lyricism but there were many pleasant episodes when making the album.

Especially when he sung the duet song ‘Girl meets love’ with Tiffany from Girls’ Generation, he even heard his friends say that they’d never envied K.Will as a singer so much.

K.Will said it was a very pleasant experience with the Dynamic Duo on the song ‘일초에 한방울 (one teardrop per second)’, as he was a fan of them.

“As a huge fan of them, it might have been hard to ask for featuring if they hadn’t liked the song, but fortunately they really liked the song. I actually left it all to them. They even wrote the lyrics by themselves and it was really impressive. If I was contented with the song, say, 100% before, it went up to 120%.”

K.Will said he listens to his album in his car. “I feel good. While listening to it, I spontaneously thought that it would have been better if I had more songs in this album,” he smiled.

20090428 Interview Part I : K.Will, kicked out of a study room? ‘For singing’

January 31, 2010 by all about K.Will

“Just until college, I naturally thought that I want to do music, but I came to think of it much seriously before going to serve for the military. A thought that I would regret forever if I don’t do music struck me. That’s when I started full-scale music.”

On 21st, I had an interview at the Pearl studio with K.Will, who’s getting lots of love from many people after he released his mini album, ‘Dropping the Tears’.

It has been 3 years from his debut, but what actually made him choose music as his career? It was the most commonplace but on the other hand the most essential question of ‘what made him become a singer’ that I first asked.

K.Will answered, “I just had this vague thought of becoming a singer. But then I ‘fell in love’ with the black music in middle school.”

“Ever since I got into music, I’d been scorned by my teacher because I was humming a song incessantly. I’d also been kicked out of a study room since I kept on singing songs,” he smiled. “In fact, my mother was a very good guitar player. She was often playing the guitar when I was singing in my room.” He told me how he was able to be familiar with music naturally.

Even he had to face his parents’ opposition to him becoming a singer. “I thought things were going to work out for me by the time I go to college, but it wasn’t as simple. It was nothing like those guitar-breaking scenes (where parents break their son’s guitars) in some movies, though. My parents thought that doing music was good, but they came up with a compromise and suggested me that I do music along with another work.”

“It was too hard for me to carry both things on my shoulder. That’s why I threw myself into music,” he added.

He also said, “It’s common that once at least every man thinks of going to the military. It was not until then that I knew I would regret in deathbed if I didn’t do music.”

His stage name K.Will, in which ‘K’ from his last name and ‘will’ showing his will for music were put together, seems to show his challenging spirit. What does he wish for now?

He started off by saying, “Last year I’ve taken the second place in music charts for quite a long time with my song ‘Love119′. Someone asked me if I don’t want the first place, so I answered, ‘ Would I want the third place instead?’.”

He confessed, “For some time I’ve been living with a mind that the first place would be too burdensome. But people who’ve been singing for a long time like Shin Seung-hun and Lee Seung-cheol are the people who have been on the top. To sing for a long time, I thought that I have to be on the top once at least.”

Sailing through the end of 2008 and the start of 2009, K.Will said, “Availing myself of the gathered momentum, I would like to upgrade myself and so,” with a cheerful voice.

He said, “My second album is planned to come out in September for now. So, I wish I could have my concert about that time,” showing another desire of his. “It’s not just a dream that I want, but it’s feasible so I’m kind of anticipating it. That wish is becoming fervent as people around me keep nudging me for a concert.”

The saying that nothing is new even the year passes is quite applicable to today’s music industry. These days, many masterpieces of music are reborn through different singers’ voices. K.Will would also like to sing some songs with his own voice.

K.Will has listened to many splendid pop songs, but he likes lyrical k-pops. So he picks Shin Seung-hun’s ‘Long after a parting’ saying, “I’ve listened to a lot of his songs and I’ve even sung one on stage. Chatting with my friends, I found out that I listened to his songs a lot during old school days, as well.”

Then he also chose Lee Gwang-su’s ‘Letter’ as a song that he would like to remake. “Both songs are sort of simple and complete, which makes them harder to remake, but once at least I would like to sing the songs to the original singers in my voice,” said he, revealing his affections for two songs.

K.Will has been in the music industry for five years, and it’s his third year as a singer. He’s been singing for quite long but he modestly says, “It’s been nowhere near long. I’m just about to put forth my strength.”

“People figuratively compare life to a marathon. I think it’s the same for music. I’ve said before that if you got the passion it takes, the whole race is not guaranteed, but at least you can start. I’ve just started and I’m in a stage of controlling my pace. Now I’m thinking if it’s time to speed up,” he said with a cordial smile.

Park Jin-young & Rain complements K.Will

Korean singer Rain has been friends with K.Will even before K.Will’s debut, as K.Will helped him as a vocal director when recording his album.

Rain says, “I believe he’s one of the best vocalists of 2007. I listen to ‘Left Heart’ whenever I get a chance these days I am so glad he came out with a song that goes very well with the upcoming spring.”

After Park Jin-young acknowledged K.Will as a great vocalist who got what it takes –talent, effort, and originality, Rain also complemented him on his talent.

Rain spoke very highly of K.Will in his remark, “K.Will has a voice that I really like. His talent is amazing, plus he has even refined it for such a long time. He exerts himself incessantly.”

Park Jin-young remarked on the completed version of ‘Left Heart’. “People say the songs I wrote are really difficult for other singers to sing in their own style, as they have too much of my personality. But ‘Left Heart’, people don’t even know that it’s my song because K.Will perfectly interpreted the song in his style.” He added, “I’ve never been so satisfied for writing a song for other singers besides me.”

K.Will’s ‘Left Heart’ is a piece of work made by the dream team of JYP and Bang Shi-hyuk, who brought god, rain, and J-Lim into stardom.

K.Will’s first album is planned to come out on the 6th of March.

K.Will says ‘TVXQ is the most talented of the Idol groups’

Before his debut, K.Will has participated in many singers’ songs in the chorus part. He has done this with the songs of TVXQ, Jo Sung-mo, Kim Jong-guk, Tei, and Fly to the Sky. He picked TVXQ’s ‘I believe’ as the song he liked the most. He said, “The song was good in itself and TVXQ made the most of it.”

Another song that he enjoyed very much is Fly to the Sky’s ‘피(避, Evasion)’. His version of the song is widely spread on the R&B related sites and received some favorable comments: “Same song, a different feel.”, “Although the notes are high, he expresses the feelings very well.”, “I like the original version, but his as well.”

Thick and masculine voice, thin and beautiful voice, and husky voice, all can K.Will make in variation. He’s looming as a talented singer who’s capable of singing with variety.

UCC of K.Will singing a Celine Dion’s song is a hot issue

K.Will, who has been called ‘the man version of Mariah Carrey’, came up with another UCC. He has shown his extremely high notes in the former one. This time, he startled people again with the song of another female singer, Celine Dion.

The UCC is from one radio show where he perfectly performed the Titanic OST, ‘My heart will go on’.

These are what most people say: “How does a man sing the song that’s difficult to sing even for women?”, “I have no words to express this impression.”

K.Will’s title song, ‘Left Heart’ ranks high in many music charts, receiving the acclaim that it is a ‘great piece of music’ sung by a ‘talented musician’.
